Challenges and obstacles of digital transformation

By Staša

We have faced tons of changes and a lot more are coming.

We are all working in a digital world. Digital transformation can be seen as a process of introducing and implementing digital strategies, becoming and being a digital company, and also reigning future challenges. Building a digital mindset that embraces constant changes and challenges is of key importance.

Many organizations struggle with defining the scenario for digital transformation. Being digital is not just about adopting software, but it is a way of finding solutions to problems using digital solutions.

Digital transformation makes sense.

Digital technologies constantly create disruptions and these trigger responses from organizations, which can range from unintentional to strategic. In any case, the outcomes of this process can be either positive or/and negative,  so organizations seek to alter their value creation paths through the power of people, technology and innovation.

The recent pandemic accelerated the use of digital technologies greatly.  Some changes that were planned to take up to 7 years, were implemented in a few months!

Crafting a successful digital strategy requires a combination of experience, problem-solving creativity, and a customer-focused perspective

According to Statista Dossier on digital transformation, an overwhelming 97% of respondents state that the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic sped up digital transformation processes in their organizations.
And it seems 2022 will include the continuation of COVID-19 challenges, therefore business leaders must be agile, creative and continue to interpret, respond to and anticipate market conditions.

Fragmented and unintegrated information systems

Digital organizations need to handle more and more data, that is generated at an exponentially increasing rate, from a large scale of data sources.  Technology is continuously and increasingly rising toward unthinkable frontiers, confusing the decision-makers about what should actually be implemented.

A real transformation takes place when the use of digital technologies leads to a change in the way a company behaves and responds

A real transformation takes place when the use of digital technologies leads to a change in the way a company behaves and responds. Particularly important are the interactions with its customers and the value they generate.

Customer journey is fragmented into hundreds of touchpoints where existing and potential clients seek information, content and experience.

Companies’ outdated data modelling is usually not able to capture the rapid shifts with the necessary speed and insights. To support the customer experience, a technological integration should be performed between functions, groups and processes.

Being able to collect the right data is one thing, but making it extremely useful requires a different skill- and mindset. A smart and integrated collection of data, building proper insight and establishing solid analytics lead to a better decision-making process.

Running pilot tests on the new technology is a great trial and error practice to help you work out bugs and potential challenges that will impact your business and culture.

Skill gaps and culture differences

In a digital company, people are more important than technology, so it should be capable of welcoming and understanding existing and new valuable partners. Employees are the primary source of a company’s creativity, innovation, agility, and service excellence, so organizations should turn to their people as the key drivers of business performance and innovation.

People are the obstacle and the potential solutions to the process of change.

People who are willing to adequately manage data represent both: the obstacle and the potential solutions to the process of change. Small, agile teams with responsibility for project management are crucial for the successful creation of competitive advantage to your business.

An agile digital culture encourages employees to look beyond current frames and engage with customers and partners to innovate and develop new solutions.
The obligation of each company is to aid the employees to learn how to face new challenges, to manage and exploit data and adopt data-driven decisions. It encourages people to take risks, fail, and learn.

Digital leaders keeping up the pace

Companies are sometimes required to make a cultural change that is not always easy. Existent strategic planning can be challenged by the advancement of innovations, predictability by agility, and new operating models should be implemented to put things into perspective.

Effective leadership has never been so important and so challenged. Their workforce now consists of a new mixture of workers, made up of humans, machines or AI. An agile mindset is needed to support innovation, to take advantage of opportunities, to keep the vision and pace, to implement change on a journey toward true transformation.

The primary motivation and target of transformation, leadership style, the importance of skills like creativity and entrepreneurial spirit among employees, risks and challenges faced in the process, consequences of potential failure and available tactics for improvement.
